Coffee break!

Galleries' Guide to Rome’s food scene/2

Il tuo caffè preferito in città?

Any time is the right time for a good coffee: to shake off the aftereffects of the night before, to boost a mid-morning lull, to round off a lunch break, or to keep pace with the afternoon… while hopping from gallery to gallery. Here are four addresses recommended by Rome’s gallerists, from Castel Sant’Angelo to Piramide, via Piazza Fiume and San Lorenzo.

Faro - Caffè Specialty
Via PIave, 55 - 00187

Just a short walk from Porta Pia, Faro is one of Rome’s most dependable addresses for a contemporary coffee break. Coffee is handled with precision: specialty selections, carefully calibrated roasts, and close attention to extraction, whether espresso or filter. The space is bright and pared-back, with service that feels informal yet knowledgeable. Alongside the coffee, there is a simple but well-executed breakfast and lunch offering. A reliable reference point for those who want to drink well, without compromise.

Close to home: Mostro, right at the entrance to Parco 8 Settembre in Piramide. It is now a beautiful specialty coffee shop and an all-round bar. In the past it was called Café du Parc, a historic neighborhood spot that I used to go to even as a child, and I was crazy about its granitas.”

Facing the Pyramid of Cestius, Mostro has grown out of the transformation of a historic Roman kiosk into a contemporary space devoted to coffee and more. The offering begins in the morning with a selection of specialty coffees prepared with precision, from espresso to filter methods, then broadens over the course of the day, from breakfast to evening aperitivo and after-dinner drinks. The atmosphere is informal and open, with a strong urban character: a place of passage that becomes a place to linger, balancing quality with the rhythm of the city.

Nero Caffè
Via Paola, 31 - 00186

Just a short walk from Castel Sant’Angelo, Nero Caffè is one of those places that perfectly catches the flow of the city center without entirely losing its own identity. Service is quick, the counter always busy, with an offering that ranges from a classic breakfast to fast lunch dishes. The atmosphere is lively, shaped by a street in constant motion, with outdoor tables and a steady coming and going of people. More than a destination, it is a reliable stopping point in the heart of the city.

Bar Marani

Bar Marani
Via dei Volsci, 57 - 00185

In the heart of San Lorenzo, Bar Marani is one of those places that seem to withstand time without chasing trends. A longstanding neighborhood meeting point, it preserves an authentic atmosphere shaped by daily rituals, timeworn tables, and an easy rhythm that invites you to linger. Its real strength is the outdoor space: a pergola draped in climbing plants, where time seems to stretch out over a coffee, a bitter, or a beer. More than just a bar, it is a fragment of working-class Rome that continues to live on with complete naturalness.
